William Shakespeare (1564-1616)

About The Player’s Shakespeare (not to be confused with the “True Shakespeare” series edited by Alf Dotson):

William Shakespeare wrote or revised nearly forty plays–most of which are surprisingly good, for a man his age.  Now in his fifth century, Shakespeare remains one of the world’s most popular and inspiring authors.  His comedies, histories, tragedies, and romances are performed more frequently and more widely than those of any other playwright.

Literary editions of Shakespeare have a valued place in the English classroom.  But never, until now, have his plays been edited by theatre people for theatre people.   The Player’s Shakespeare supplies everything that directors, actors, and drama teachers require to put Shakespeare on stage, where he best belongs.
